Material Guide

Patio Paver Materials for Florida's Climate

South Florida patios face UV index 11–12, 90%+ summer humidity, 57–65 inches of annual rainfall, and mold pressure from tree canopy shade. Material selection must account for all four — not just aesthetics.

Travertine Patio Pavers — Craft Pavers South Florida patio
Most Popular · From $17/sq ft

Travertine Patio Pavers

Cool-Touch, Mold-Resistant, Timeless

Travertine is the South Florida patio standard — its natural porous microstructure dissipates heat instead of storing it, keeping surfaces 20–25°F cooler than concrete in direct sun. The Versailles pattern in tumbled travertine suits the overwhelming majority of HOA-governed Palm Beach and Broward communities.

  • Stays 20–25°F cooler than concrete underfoot in direct South Florida midday sun
  • Brushed and tumbled finishes: DCOF 0.60+ — slip-resistant on wet patio surfaces
  • Naturally compatible with pool deck material for seamless outdoor aesthetic continuity
  • Versailles, running bond, and random ashlar patterns available — HOA ARC compatible
  • Sealing cycle: 18 months (coastal/shaded) to 3 years (inland/full sun)
Interlocking Concrete Pavers — Craft Pavers South Florida patio
Most Versatile · From $12/sq ft

Interlocking Concrete Pavers

HOA-Friendly. Durable. Every Budget.

Concrete patio pavers offer the widest selection of colors, textures, sizes, and patterns in Florida — making them the default choice for HOA communities where aesthetic guidelines require matching existing hardscape or specific palette approvals.

  • ASTM C936-rated at 8,000+ PSI — handles outdoor furniture, outdoor kitchen loads, and fire pit surrounds
  • 40+ color and texture options to match any HOA palette or existing hardscape
  • Individual units can be lifted for irrigation, plumbing, or utility access without demolition
  • Permeable concrete paver upgrade available for drainage-challenged patio areas
  • Sealing cycle: 2.5–4 years depending on tree canopy shade and coastal exposure
Porcelain Patio Pavers — Craft Pavers South Florida patio
Zero Maintenance · From $20/sq ft

Porcelain Patio Pavers

No Sealing. No Staining. No Mold.

Porcelain's kiln-fired zero-porosity surface is ideal for shaded South Florida patios where mold and tannin staining from overhanging trees are ongoing challenges. Non-porous surface means no sealing required and no organic foothold for the mold and algae spores that thrive in Florida's humidity.

  • Non-porous surface: tannin stains, algae, mold, and pool chemical splash cannot penetrate
  • UV index 11–12 rated: kiln-fired pigmentation does not fade under Florida's extreme sun exposure
  • Available in large-format slabs (up to 48"×48") for contemporary, seamless patio aesthetics
  • Textured surface specification achieves DCOF 0.60+ for wet-surface traction after Florida rain
  • Lowest lifetime maintenance cost — no mandatory sealing schedule required
Natural Limestone Patio Pavers — Craft Pavers South Florida patio
Cool & Natural · From $14/sq ft

Natural Limestone Patio Pavers

Organic Texture. Shaded Patio Specialist.

Natural limestone pavers offer an organic, hand-cut aesthetic that suits tropical and Mediterranean-style homes throughout South Florida. Best specified for partially shaded patios — limestone's higher porosity requires a shorter sealing cycle in full-sun applications.

  • Naturally cool surface — similar thermal properties to travertine for barefoot comfort
  • Hand-cut and tumbled finishes provide authentic natural stone texture and variation
  • Lighter colorways (Pearl White, Silver, Coral) reflect rather than absorb Florida's UV
  • Partially shaded patios: 18–24 month sealing cycle. Full sun: 12–18 months.
  • Pairs naturally with tropical landscaping and Mediterranean-style home architecture
Our Method

The Patio Paver Installation Process

Every South Florida patio installation is engineered for drainage, mold resistance, and HOA compliance from day one — not addressed as afterthoughts after the pavers are down.

01

On-Site Design Consultation & Drainage Assessment

We walk your patio area, assess drainage slopes, sun exposure, tree canopy, outdoor kitchen or fire pit plans, HOA documentation requirements, and existing hardscape connections. Pattern and material are specified based on actual site conditions — not a catalog.

02

HOA ARC & Permit Filing

For governed communities: complete ARC package prepared first (scope drawing, material specs, contractor license, COI, color/pattern samples). Permit filed after written ARC approval — the legally correct sequence. We track both processes and schedule installation only after full approvals.

03

Excavation, Base Engineering & Drainage Grading

4–6" excavation for standard patios; deeper for outdoor kitchen surrounds or fire pit bases. Geotextile fabric on sub-grade. Compacted limestone base at 95% Proctor density. Minimum 1–2% drainage slope away from home foundation and all outdoor structures. Edge restraints set before paver laying.

04

Paver Installation, Pattern Laying & Sealing Schedule

Pattern laid per approved design with consistent joint spacing. Marine-grade or standard polymeric compound by coastal zone. Final plate compaction. Written sealing schedule calibrated to your material, coastal exposure, and tree canopy shade. First seal recommended at 30–45 days post-installation.
