Thin Pavers Over Concrete No Demo. No Excavation.
Transform an aging concrete driveway, pool deck, or patio with a bonded paver overlay — skip the $15,000 demo and excavation cost. Porcelain, travertine, and thin concrete pavers installed directly over your existing slab. From $8/sq ft installed.
Overlay Paver Materials — Which Is Right for Your Slab?
Material selection depends on the application, expected load, and existing surface condition. All options below are suitable for bonded overlay installation over a structurally sound concrete slab.
| Material | Price Range | Best For | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Porcelain Overlay (10–12mm) | $12–$20 / sq ft | Driveways, patios, indoor-outdoor transitions | Best adhesion to concrete, impervious to moisture, UV-stable, widest color and finish range — the go-to overlay for South Florida's humid climate; vehicle-rated at ≥12mm |
| Thin Concrete Pavers (20–40mm) | $8–$14 / sq ft | Driveways, walkways, pool decks | Thicker than porcelain but still eliminates excavation; available in Belgard and Tremron overlay profiles; lower profile allows existing edge transitions to be preserved |
| Thin Natural Travertine (20mm) | $14–$20 / sq ft | Pool decks, patios, luxury driveways | Matches existing travertine coping without full demo; DCOF 0.60+ in tumbled finish; naturally cool underfoot; best choice when an existing travertine pool deck has cracked concrete underneath |
| Thin Natural Limestone (20mm) | $13–$19 / sq ft | Entry areas, patios, courtyard transitions | Florida limestone in coral and silver finishes; compatible with Spanish-Mediterranean architecture common in Palm Beach and Broward HOA communities |
Where Paver Overlay Makes Financial Sense in South Florida
Save $4–6 / sq ft vs full replacement
Concrete Driveway Overlay
Palm Beach and Broward Counties have thousands of 15–25 year old concrete driveways that are still structurally sound but showing surface wear, staining, and aesthetic deterioration. Overlay with porcelain or thin concrete pavers transforms the appearance without the $15,000+ cost of full removal and base reconstruction. Most HOA communities approve paver overlays without ARC redesign — existing impervious surface footprint is unchanged.
From $14 / sq ft — travertine overlay
Pool Deck Concrete Overlay
Cracked pool deck concrete is the most common South Florida overlay application. The concrete slab is almost always repairable — it's the surface that cracks, not the structural slab. Thin travertine or porcelain over a repaired and crack-membraned concrete deck delivers a fresh, luxury appearance without the pool equipment disruption that full demo would require.
From $12 / sq ft — porcelain overlay
Patio & Lanai Overlay
Screened lanai slabs and outdoor patios frequently develop surface crazing and staining in Florida's climate. An overlay converts a worn slab into a porcelain or natural stone surface in 1–2 days, with no excavation or significant disruption. The low-profile overlay maintains existing door thresholds and drainage slopes, critical in screened enclosure applications.
From $8 / sq ft — concrete paver overlay
Walkway & Entry Overlay
Entry walkways and front paths are high-visibility, low-square-footage applications where overlay makes strong financial sense. A 150–300 sq ft entry path in thin travertine or porcelain can be completed in a single day over existing concrete, dramatically improving curb appeal and adding to appraisal value at a fraction of the full installation cost.
How We Install Pavers Over Concrete
The concrete assessment step is the most critical. A misjudged slab condition is the most common cause of overlay failure — we never skip it.
Concrete Assessment & Prep
We evaluate the existing slab for structural integrity, surface profile, moisture content, and crack type. Spalled areas are ground smooth. Cracks are filled with flexible polyurethane or crack isolation membrane is applied over active cracks. The surface is power-washed and allowed to fully dry before bonding begins.
Height & Slope Planning
Overlay adds 10–40mm to the finished surface height, depending on material. We assess every threshold, drain, and transition point before work begins — door bottoms, garage seals, existing expansion joints, and drainage slope. Transitions are planned and discussed with the homeowner before any material is bonded.
Mortar Bonding
Porcelain overlays are set in polymer-modified thin-set mortar applied to both the slab and the back of each paver. Thick-bed systems (concrete and travertine) use a bonded mortar bed. Joint widths are laid out consistently; control joints in the overlay are aligned with existing joints in the concrete below.
Grout & Final Inspection
Joints are grouted with epoxy or sanded grout appropriate to the joint width and material type. Final inspection checks for hollow spots (tapped-test), lippage between units, proper drainage slope, and joint fill uniformity. The surface is cleaned and sealed where appropriate before handoff.
