Our Process Of Paver Sealing Services

Inspection and Repairs

Repairs are not always a part of the process though at times it is necessary in order to have perfect looking pavers when the job is completed.

Upon arrival, the Craft Paver Sealing Parkland crew will do a thorough walkthrough and inspect the pavers in order to find any damages that may need attention. If repairs are needed, we will inform you and discuss the best available options.

Paver Cleaning

First and foremost, we will start with steam cleaning the pavers. The reason why we start with steam cleaning instead of regular pressure washing is that it gets deep into the pores of the pavers and removes all the dirt, moss, mildew, and anything else that may be lurking below the surface.

This step is important because, if any of this is left behind, it will show through after the sealer is applied. If needed, a stain remover, a speciality cleaner, or an acid will be applied and brushed to remove any extra oil, stains, or gunk and debris that is left in the cracks. After we thoroughly cleaned the pavers, it is time to allow them to dry.

Joint Sanding

After a thorough steam cleaning, an application of joint-sand or polymeric sand is a very important step in the process of the cleaning, sealing and restoration of your pavers. What the joint sand does is fill in the cracks and joints of your pavers, binding everything together to create a smooth and strong surface.

This is an important step because it will help prevent weeds, ants, and other crawling insects from coming up through the cracks and joints of your pavers, as well as create a stronger interlocking surface. It is important to note that if you decide on using regular joint sand, it is necessary to use joint stabilizing sealer, and apply generously into the joints which will essentially act like a polymeric sand.

Compacting

Compacting the pavers after re-sanding is a very important step that is often overlooked.

Using a padded plate compactor after re-sanding packs the sand in the joints making sure they are filled thoroughly. Compacting also evens out the pavers if they have moved since the installation.

Filling up the joints

After compacting some of the sand will move deeper into the joins leaving them filled unevenly or half empty. So, after compaction the sanding process is repeated to make sure the joints are filled up evenly and all the way up to ⅛” below the top.

Paver Sealing

After the polymeric sand has been applied and allowed to harden , we will start the process of sealing your pavers. We only use high-quality sealers from the most reputable company on the market with a variety of products to meet your specific needs.

This step will provide added protection from the elements, as well as make it easier to clean your pavers in the future. You can expect the sealer to last 3-5 years before it will need to be reapplied, depending on the amount of traffic and exposure to the elements. There are several different types of sealers which will determine the final look of your pavers.

The method, application and materials used by the Craft Paver Sealing & Restoration team, we can assure that the fresh look of your pavers will last for several years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Paver sealing is a process where a protective coating is applied to the surface of pavers. This sealer helps protect the pavers from damage caused by weather, stains, and general wear and tear. It also enhances the color and appearance of the pavers, making them look vibrant and new.

Sealing your pavers provides multiple benefits: it enhances the color, protects against stains and weather damage, prevents weed and moss growth, improves durability, reduces maintenance needs, and increases the longevity of the pavers and more.

Not sealing pavers can lead to color fading, increased staining, weed and moss growth, erosion, and a shorter lifespan. Unsealed pavers are more susceptible to weather damage and general wear and tear.

Sealing pavers can also increase the value of your property by enhancing curb appeal, improving durability, and reducing maintenance needs. Well-maintained outdoor spaces are attractive to potential buyers.

While you can seal your pavers yourself, hiring a professional is recommended for the best results. Professionals have the experience, tools, and high-quality products to ensure a thorough and even application. Their experience sealing different pavers will bring more accurate details into the process.

The paver sealing process typically takes one to two days, depending on the size of the area, the condition of the pavers, and weather conditions. This includes cleaning, drying, and applying the sealer.

The best time to seal pavers is during warm, dry weather. Spring and summer are ideal, as the temperatures are higher and there is less chance of rain. The pavers need to be completely dry before sealing.

There are two main types of sealers: water-based and solvent-based. Water-based sealers are eco-friendly and provide a natural look, while solvent-based sealers offer a glossy finish and are more durable. Both types protect against stains and weather damage.

Choosing the right sealer depends on your desired finish (matte or glossy), the type of pavers, and the specific needs of your outdoor space. Consulting with a professional can help you select the best sealer for your pavers.

Paver sealing can enhance the color, making it more vibrant. Some sealers also add a glossy finish. However, the overall color change is usually positive and brings out the natural beauty of the pavers.

Paver sealer typically lasts between 2 to 3 years. Factors such as climate, traffic, and the type of sealer used can affect its longevity. Regular maintenance can help extend the life of the sealer.

Before sealing, pavers should be thoroughly cleaned to remove dirt, stains, and any existing sealer. This may involve pressure washing and using cleaning agents. The pavers must also be completely dry before applying the new sealer.

Some sealers can make pavers slippery, especially when wet. To avoid this, choose a sealer that includes an anti-slip additive or apply an anti-slip product after sealing.

Yes, you can pressure wash sealed pavers, but use a lower pressure setting to avoid damaging the sealer. Regular cleaning helps maintain the appearance and longevity of the sealed pavers.

If your sealed pavers become stained, clean the affected area with a mild detergent and water. For tougher stains, use a specialized paver cleaner. Addressing stains promptly helps prevent permanent damage.

Yes, you can reseal pavers that are already sealed. However, it's important to clean them thoroughly and ensure the previous sealer is not flaking or peeling. Consult a professional if you're unsure.

Rain shortly after sealing can wash away the sealer before it fully cures, leading to uneven coverage and reduced effectiveness. It's best to seal pavers when there's no rain forecast for at least 24 hours.

After sealing, wait at least 24 to 48 hours before using the driveway or patio to allow the sealer to fully cure. This ensures the best protection and longevity. After 48 hours, assuming that all other conditions are fulfilled (ex. no rain, snow etc.) you can use the driveway or patio.

Yes, there are environmentally friendly paver sealers available. Water-based sealers are typically more eco-friendly than solvent-based ones, as they contain fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Sealing pavers helps reduce weed and moss growth by filling the joints and creating a barrier. However, it may not completely prevent growth. Regular maintenance and weed control measures are still necessary.

Yes, you can seal newly installed pavers, but it's recommended to wait at least 30 days to allow the pavers to settle and any efflorescence (white chalky residue) to appear and be cleaned off.

Signs that your pavers need resealing include a dull appearance, increased staining, and water no longer beading on the surface. Regular inspection can help you determine when resealing is necessary.

Water-based sealers are eco-friendly, have low odor, and provide a natural look. Solvent-based sealers are more durable, offer a glossy finish, and provide stronger protection against stains and weather.

While not absolutely necessary, sealing is beneficial for most types of pavers, including concrete, brick, and natural stone. It enhances their appearance and longevity and provides protection against damage.

It is not recommended to apply paver sealer over a painted surface. The sealer may not adhere properly and could lead to peeling and flaking. The paint should be removed before sealing.

Yes, there is a difference in sealer quality between brands. Higher-quality sealers typically offer better protection, longevity, and appearance. It's important to choose a reputable brand and consult with professionals for recommendations.

Questions to ask a paver sealing contractor include:

  • What type of sealer do you use?
  • How many years of experience do you have?
  • Can you provide references or examples of past work?
  • What is the total cost and what does it include?
  • What is the expected timeline for the project?

You will know the sealer has been applied correctly if the pavers have a uniform appearance, water beads on the surface, and there are no visible streaks or missed spots. Proper curing time is also essential for best results.

Joint stabilizing sealers are designed to harden the sand in the joints, providing additional stability and preventing weed growth. Regular sealers primarily protect the surface and enhance the appearance of the pavers.
