Why Sealing Pavers?

Many people think of sealing pavers only as an esthetic improvement, which is the secondary outcome. Here are benefits of sealing pavers:

  • Paver sealing protects your pavers from the elements as well as stains, organic growth, dirt, and grime.
  • Paver sealing also makes it easier to clean your pavers.
  • Paver sealing enhances the color of your pavers and gives them a wet or natural new-like look.
  • Paver sealing protects the surface from deteriorating and fading due to constant exposure to the sun’s UV rays, think of it as a sunblock for your pavers.
  • Inhibits weeds and grass in joints.
  • Reduces moss and mildew growth.
  • Hardens the joint sand thus stabilizing the pavers to each other.
  • Prevents loss of sand in joints.
  • Enhances color, texture and brightness
  • Reduces paver loosening and cracks
  • Paver sealing can also make your pavers not slippery!

Our Process Of Paver Sealing Services

Inspection & Repairs

Repairs are not always a part of the process though at times it is necessary in order to have perfect looking pavers when the job is completed. Upon arrival, our crew will do a thorough walkthrough and inspect the pavers in order to find any damages that may need attention. If repairs are needed, we will inform you and discuss the best available options.

Cleaning

First and foremost, we will start with steam cleaning the pavers. The reason why we start with steam cleaning instead of regular pressure washing is that it gets deep into the pores of the pavers and removes all the dirt, moss, mildew, and anything else that may be lurking below the surface. This step is important because, if any of this is left behind, it will show through after the sealer is applied. If needed, a stain remover, a speciality cleaner, or  an acid will be applied and brushed to remove any extra oil, stains, or gunk and debris that is left in the cracks. After we thoroughly cleaned the pavers, it is time to allow them to dry.

Re-sanding with joint-sand or Polymeric Sand

After a thorough steam cleaning, an application of joint-sand or polymeric sand is a very important step in the process of  the cleaning, sealing and restoration of your pavers. What the joint sand does is fill in the cracks and joints of your pavers, binding everything together to create a smooth and strong surface. This is an important step because it will help prevent weeds, ants, and other crawling insects from coming up through the cracks and joints of your pavers, as well as create a stronger interlocking surface. It is important to note that if you decide on using regular joint sand, it is necessary to use joint stabilizing sealer, and apply generously into the joints which will essentially act like a polymeric sand.

Compacting

Compacting the pavers after re-sanding is a very important step that is often overlooked.

Using a padded plate compactor after re-sanding packs the sand in the joints making sure they are filled thoroughly. Compacting also evens out the pavers if they have moved since the installation.

Filling up the joints

After compacting some of the sand will move deeper into the joins leaving them filled unevenly or half empty. So, after compaction the sanding process is repeated to make sure the joints are filled up evenly and all the way up  to ⅛” below the top.

Sealing

After the polymeric sand has been applied and allowed to harden , we will start the process of sealing your pavers. We only use high-quality sealers from the most reputable company on the market with a variety of products to meet your specific needs. This step will provide added protection from the elements, as well as make it easier to clean your pavers in the future. You can expect the sealer to last 3-5 years before it will need to be reapplied, depending on the amount of traffic and exposure to the elements. There are several different types of sealers which will determine the final look of your pavers.

F.A.Q.

Here are some of the most common questions we are often asked about paver sealing, hope it helps. If you have any other questions about your project and paver sealing in general, feel free to call us or submit your question here

Is paver sealer necessary?

The short answer is Yes. Paver sealant is an important maintenance tool to keep paver patios, walkways, driveways and pool decks looking as beautiful as they day they were installed.

What happens if I don't seal my pavers?

Pavers that aren’t sealed will be more likely to grow weeds in the joints, they will fade and loose their color from wear and UV breakdown, and because most newer paver sealers include an additive that will harden the joint sand it is less likely that you will have settling or shifting caused by joint sand loss.

How often should I seal my pavers?

Generally speaking, you should seal your pavers every 3-5 years. You will notice if and when your pavers begin to fade or show signs that they need resealing. You also have to consider the placement of the pavers.

Will sealing pavers prevent weeds?

Sealing pavers helps prevent weed growth between your pavers and patio stones. Sealant seeps down into the joint sand between your pavers and hardens it to mortar-like consistency, which stops weeds from taking root in your paver patio.

Does sealing pavers make them slippery?

Paver sealer products can be slippery if applied too thick, leaving behind a slick film on the surface. We can this situation by using thin mil sealers that penetrate deep into the surface and leave a very thin film on the surface. We can also use additives in the sealer itself to increase the friction on the surface.
